There are a number of different types of bipolar disorder problems that people will experience. Some are not as drastic as others and can be easier to handle. There are some people that will experience high amounts of depression and others that might only deal with mania. Than there are others who have to deal with both sides of the equation. This is known as mixed state bipolar disorder.
People who suffer from the mixed state will have to take special medication in order to control the massive mood swings that they have. They will suddenly be very depressed and than will switch to having bouts of mania. In rare cases these will happen at the same time and the people have not understanding of how to cope with it all.
A manic episode could last for a few hours or it could last for a few months. It is important to learn how to identify the symptoms in someone that you know or even in yourself.
- Racing thoughts
- Reckless behavior
- Lack of self control
- Lack of concentration
This is probably one of the worst things that people with bipolar disorder have to deal with and it is one of the most common. This can also last for a few hours or months at a time.
- Feeling of guilt
- No self esteem
- Thoughts of suicide
- Loss of appetite
- Lack of sleep
- Withdrawing from friends and activities
The worst part of the disorder will occur when both the depression and the mania episodes are combined. This is hard on the mind and body and it causes symptoms that are easy to spot and hard to watch.
- Suicidal thoughts
- Panic attacks
This is another popular problem that will occur when people are dealing with the mixed state bipolar disorder. This involves extreme mania episodes and causes the person to lose touch with what is real and what is not.
- Visual and auditory hallucinations
- Feeling paranoid or persecuted
- Rapid changes in thought
- No ability to recognize surroundings
