Famous People Who Are Bipolar

There are a number of us who are virtually unaware of bipolar disorder and the huge impact that it can have on a person’s life. If you or someone that you know has been diagnosed than they might be having a hard time dealing with the shock of it all. It can be difficult to suddenly have to find a way to treat this disease. However, it might help to know that there are quite a few famous people who had been diagnosed with this disease and to learn of the struggles that they have worked through.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

Van Damme is one of the most famous action heroes along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. During 1984 and 1994 he was married four different times and was addicted to cocaine. It was not until the 1990’s that he was diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar disorder. He started treatments and since that time he was able to turn his life around completely. He remarried his third wife and was able to stop the cocaine drug abuse by going ‘cold turkey’.

Carrie Fisher

Most of us know Carrie Fisher for her famous role in Star Wars as princess Leia. She was very stunning during those times and many of us were disappointed when we did not see much of her after that. It was not until her interview with Diane Sawyer in 2000 that we learned of her battle with bipolar disorder. After going public with her story she became one of the biggest celebrity advocates of this condition.

She shared with the world her substance abuse and how hard it was for her to take the medication that was prescribed to treat the condition. People who struggle with this same problem will be moved by her story. In the interview she explained how hard it was for her to continue to deal with the medication and staying on it until she had a child. It was than that she put things into perspective and understood how, in the end, it would help to stop the episodes.

Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy

Patrick Kennedy was very well known for the self medication and the horrible outbursts of temper. When it came out that he had bipolar disorder people became sympathetic to his struggles and he began to become an advocate for others who had been diagnosed with the same problem. His story is brief – but it shows the perseverance and hope that he had when it came to treating and fighting the inner demons that tried to plague him.
