When you are reading about various medical conditions there is always a page telling you how to ‘prevent’ the condition from affecting you. If you want to avoid lung cancer then do not smoke. Unfortunately there is not much that you can do when trying to avoid bipolar disorder.
Health research shows that this problem occurs in the brain and has to do with how it is able to transmit certain emotions at certain times. Therefore, there is absolutely nothing that anyone is able to do that would avoid the problem affecting them. However, there are steps that you can take in order to keep the episodes from getting out of control.
Know Your Trigger
There are certain triggers that will set you off. It is important to work one on one with a therapist or your doctor to understand what those are and how to avoid them. You and the people that take care of you should both know them and how to avoid all of them if at all possible.
Avoid Drugs And Alcohol
Alcohol and illegal drugs have never been the answer to anyone with bipolar depression so do not start. If you feel that this is a temptation for you than read about the famous people with bipolar disorder and how abusing these substances only worsened the condition. Only use the drugs that your doctor has prescribed to you.
Take Your Medicine
The biggest problem that bipolar patients have is refusing to take the medication given to them by their personal physician. I know that these can cause side effects that you hate – but this is what helps to control the episodes. With these medicines you and the people that you are around will be much happier. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security in between episodes.
